In early American culture hooked rugs were ahead of their time in that they were a recycled craft born out of need and tranformed into art. Enterprising homemakers utilized empty grain sacks made of burlap as a backing and any spare scrap of cloth to hook in a design thereby making rugs to keep feet warm during the cold New England winters.
